Accumen is a boutique accounting and business advisory firm on William Street in the CBD of Bathurst. We offer accounting and advisory services mainly to local small businesses and Self Managed Super Fund (SMSF) owners.

We’re a progressive, forward-thinking team of experts — a close-knit group that values education and continued learning. As a Xero Gold Partner, MYOB Gold Partner and a member firm of Chartered Accountants ANZ, we can support your development all the way toward a CA qualification.

What the cadetship means for you

  • Earn while you learn. A paid role, part-time alongside your studies (or full-time in breaks), building real experience and income across your degree.
  • Kick-start your accounting career with practical, relevant client work from day one.
  • Receive excellent support and structured mentoring from our qualified team, experienced in training.
  • Grow with us throughout your degree — with a genuine pathway toward CA qualification, ongoing employment if you’re studying locally, and, in time, partnership.

Who we’re looking for

We’re seeking a cadet to work with us while you complete your undergraduate accounting degree. To be eligible:

  1. You must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident.
  2. You must be currently completing an undergraduate degree in accounting.
  3. You are positive, enthusiastic, self-motivated and mature-minded.
  4. You can articulate your ideas and communicate well with others.
  5. You are strong in mathematics and have an analytical mind.

The work you’ll do

As a paid member of the team, you’ll take on real responsibility from the start and grow into more advanced work as you progress through your degree:

  • Bookkeeping — recording and organising our business clients’ financial transactions.
  • Preparation of BAS and other business reports and financial statements.
  • Preparation of income tax returns for individuals, companies, trusts, sole traders and partnerships.
  • Reconciliation of bank accounts and key balance-sheet items, and preparation of workpapers to Trial Balance for review.
  • Learning and using software including MYOB, Xero (working toward Xero certification) and Microsoft Excel.
  • Building genuine client relationships and acting as a point of contact under supervision.
  • Skill development in working within a professional environment, as part of a caring team.

As you build experience, you’ll progress toward more advanced compliance and advisory work, CA-program study with our support, and greater client ownership. Start date is flexible — tell us your availability around your studies and we’ll work in with it.

Questions about this role

Is the Cadet Accountant role paid?

Yes. The Cadet Accountant role is paid employment, not a university placement. It can be worked part-time around your class timetable and exams, or full-time during breaks.

Do I need to be studying to apply for a cadetship?

Yes. The cadetship is for a current undergraduate accounting student, and you need Australian citizenship or permanent residency. Hours are arranged flexibly around your timetable.

What is the difference between a cadetship and a work placement?

A cadetship is paid employment arranged directly with Accumen and worked across your degree. A university work placement, such as CSU's ACC275, is unpaid, runs for a set number of hours and is arranged through the university, which provides your insurance.

What would I learn as a cadet?

Bookkeeping, preparation of BAS and financial statements, income tax returns for individuals, companies, trusts, sole traders and partnerships, bank and balance sheet reconciliations, workpapers to trial balance, and MYOB and Xero while working toward Xero certification.
